History
In the late 1700s, a staircase was built leading up to Fort Fincastle, the highest point in Nassau, due to its strategic position. This was done in order to provide a direct access route to the fort in case of an invasion. At the time, The Bahamas was a target for European marauders and the British were fearful of an attack, so they also built a number of forts, such as Fort Fincastle, Fort Montagu, and Fort Charlotte, which remain standing today.
